'For more than twenty years Lithuania has been feeling a strong support from Norway, the country which was one of the first to recognize the independence of Lithuania and which consistently supports Lithuanian aim to gain energetic independence. Our states are reliable allies not only in the Nordic and Baltic region, but also in NATO. We cooperate successfully in the areas of economy, security, energy, and culture. We are very happy to have such a strong partner,' said the President.
The President stressed, that the cooperation of Nordic and Baltic states continues to be one of the most important priorities of the foreign policy in our state. According to the President, the construction of electrical connections between Sweden and Finland, functioning energy market and unified positions of the states on responsible financial discipline is the best evidence, that the cooperation between the states is not only unique, but also fruitful in concrete tangible results.
During the meeting, the President also spoke about the Lithuanian readiness for the Presidency of EU Council. According to the President, strong, competitive and financially stable EU is the aim of our state.
This is already the second meeting of the President with the King of Norway Harald V. The President has visited Norway on a state visit two years ago, when the twentieth anniversary of diplomatic relations has been commemorated.
The President is also going to discuss with the Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg about the prospects of Lithuania and Norway cooperation in the areas of economy and energy and the possibilities of Norwegian gas import.
Moreover, the President will take part in the International Labour Organisation's discussion 'How to overcome the consequences of the financial crisis'. Also, the President will meet with the secretary-general of the International Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development; will give an interview to one of the main Norwegian newspapers 'Aftenposten'.
