The honourable award will be given the famous Latin American actress, long-serving president of the International Committee for the Banner of Peace of the United Nations, Dr. Alicia Rodriguez Fernandez. The Banner of Peace stands for a symbolic commitment to preserve art, science and cultural values of humankind and defend world peace. The flag will be kept in the Seimas of Lithuania and every year, on the International Day of Culture, 15 April, will be flown outside the parliament's building.
The banner dates back to the ratification of the Roerich Pact 80 years ago. The pact obligates to protect artistic and scientific institutions and historical monuments both at the time of peace and war.
According to Aukse Narviliene, coordinator of the UN International Committee for the Banner of Peace in Lithuania, our country's merits in culture development and protection of cultural heritage are highly valued, while Dr Fernandez has awarded around 3,000 of such banners in the world.
