During their meeting, the President and the Ambassador discussed topical EU issues, the work and challenges ahead. The President underlined the need to preserve the unity of both the euro zone and the whole of the EU while ensuring that member states respected their commitments.
The President and the new Ambassador also addressed the economic situation in Europe and solutions to the Greek debt crisis. The President underlined that only a responsible fiscal policy and the implementation of in-depth reforms could help Greece.
Among the other issues discussed were the security situation in Europe and cooperation among member states in the area of defense. According to the President, European countries must stand united and act in solidarity when ensuring the security of EU external borders, preparing a joint response to disinformation and hostile propaganda, and reinforcing the protection of cyber and information space. It is also necessary for the EU to retain focus on the conflict in Ukraine.
The EU must continue improving its competitiveness by strengthening the internal market. According to the President, it is crucial to continue building the internal energy market and reducing the EU's dependence on a single supplier of energy. Strong focus should be given to the synchronization of Baltic electricity grids with continental Europe and to the transparency of agreements with external suppliers.
