On Tuesday during the morning session a mixed group of members requested a recess in project discussion until the next sitting. Consequently, they made the same request in the evening session.

The discussion on project proposal, which would liberalize the spelling of names, has been agreed upon taking place this week in the Seimas. Seimas' Committee on Legal Affairs agreed to allow the use of non-Lithuanian alphabetical characters in name spelling of Lithuanian citizens in ID's, provided that the citizens of non-Lithuanian nationality possess the source documentation with the original inscription of their name.

However the State Commission of the Lithuanian Language maintains, that q, w and x characters should only be allowed in the case of Lithuanian citizen marrying and taking the name of a foreigner, including the children of such couples and those that obtained Lithuanian citizenship.

Alternatively, there is another proposal, which suggests the original spelling of names should only appear on the additional page of the documentation.

The issue of the original name record in documentation has been a plea of Lithuanian Poles for years now, supported by Warsaw's authorities and the Lithuanian women, who married foreigners.

Critics believe that allowing the original record of names for citizens of non-Lithuanian descent will undermine the status of official language.
