"The invitation is a significant acknowledgment of Lithuania's consistent efforts which will open more opportunities to defend the interests of our state. OECD membership will enhance Lithuania's attractiveness to foreign investors, promote closer cooperation with the most advanced countries in the world and will contribute to bolstering economic growth and welfare of our country," the President said.
Dalia Grybauskaitė underlined that the opening of OECD accession talks was also an obligation for Lithuania to further strengthen its economic competitiveness and promote innovations, boost youth employment, improve the corporate governance of state-owned enterprises as well as implement other reforms that are necessary for the successful development of the state.
During the phone conversation, the President thanked the Secretary-General for enduring cooperation with Lithuania and conveyed sincere thanks to OECD member countries for their acknowledgement of Lithuania's readiness to seek membership in this organisation.
Lithuania officially applied for OECD membership in 2002.
