There are 12 candidates for the Vilnius mayor post, but the favourites are Valdemar Tomaševski, leader of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania, Artūras Zuokas, current mayor of Vilnius, and Remigijus Šimašius on behalf of the Liberal Union of Lithuania. Other candidates are Vitalijus Balkus, Petras Gražulis, Indrė Kleinaitė, Mykolas Majauskas, Gintautas Paluckas, Julius Panka, Jonas Pinskus, Naglis Puteikis, and Virginija Vingrienė.
Last week delfi.lt announced a plebiscite for its readers to find out who is the favourite for the mayor of Vilnius. The results of the poll were announced yesterday, on Friday 16th January. And the winner was Valdemar Tomaševski, who got 30.8 % of votes (23362 votes). Second place went to Artūras Zuokas (25.9 %.), third – to Remigijus Šimašius (11.8 %). 76601 readers took part in the plebiscite.
Political scientists are not surprised by such outcomes. Mažvydas Jastramskis (Institute of International Relations and Political Science) during his conversation with delfi.lt told that such results of polls are not surprising at all. 'I was expecting something like this to happen. Such tendencies were obvious already a few months ago,' told Jastramskis. He also stressed, that Zuokas and Tomaševski have a great chance to face each other during the second round of elections for the position of mayor of Vilnius.
There was similar situation during presidential elections last year. Valdemar Tomaševski got the most votes in Vilnius – 17.2 %. Artūras Zuokas was second (9.9 %), Naglis Puteikis – third (6.3 %).
