On Monday evening, he took part in a ceremony of lighting commemorative bonfires next to the Lithuanian National Radio and Television building to commemorate January 13, 1991 events.
24 years ago in the aftermath of the deadly January 13 events on behalf of entire Poland Michnik said the same words at the Lithuanian Seimas. He and many other Polish intellectuals became active supporters of Lithuania in the public sphere and always talked against setting Lithuanians and Polish against each other.
On Tuesday, Michnik will be awarded with the Freedom Prize 2014 at the Seimas of Lithuania.
Over 1,000 unarmed Lithuanian civilians were injured and 14 were killed during an attempt by the Soviet army and Special Forces to take over the Vilnius TV Tower on 13 January 1991.
