"I think the society has matured already and we need to be ready to talk to people openly. Of course questions on the referendum must be formed carefully so that obtaining citizenship does not become an uncontrolled process. Many people have left the country, it is not good to take away their right to be Lithuanian citizens and I would support the referendum. () Emigration has touched almost every second Lithuanian family. Therefore, I believe Lithuania is becoming ready for the referendum," Grybauskaite told the journalists on Thursday.
The president emphasised the need for a wide and open discussion before the referendum may take place. According to the president, when the last referendums were being organised people were told many lies, some information was concealed and manipulated. Hence this must change.
The Coalition has proposed to hold a referendum on dual citizenship together with 2016 parliamentary elections.
