“Today, Lithuania and Poland stand shoulder to shoulder as allies who ground their security not just in words, but in concrete actions and long-term investments in defense,” President Gitanas Nausėda said.
The two leaders observed the international field tactical exercise ‘Gallant Boar'25’, which includes forces from Poland, Lithuania, the United States, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, Sweden, and Romania. “This exercise sends a clear message that we are ready to defend our countries, our people, and NATO’s entire eastern flank. I’m especially pleased that it is taking place near Lithuania’s border, close to the Suwałki Corridor—whose defense is our shared responsibility,” Gitanas Nausėda added.
During their bilateral meeting, the Lithuanian and Polish Presidents focused on regional security challenges and preparations for the upcoming NATO Summit in The Hague. Gitanas Nausėda emphasized the importance of achieving concrete outcomes at the summit that will strengthen transatlantic unity and reinforce NATO’s deterrence and defense posture. The Head of State also underlined that Europe must take responsibility and significantly increase defense spending.
“Lithuania and Poland are leading by example. Starting next year, Lithuania will allocate over 5% of its GDP to defense, alongside the rapid development of its national division,” President Gitanas Nausėda pointed out.
The leaders also discussed the importance of the United States’ military presence in the region, agreeing that Lithuania and Poland must continue to provide all the necessary conditions for U.S. forces to remain present and active in the region.
The meeting also addressed the European Union’s defense agenda. According to the Lithuanian President, the current challenges demand wartime planning and funding—not bureaucratic discussions—as well as urgent consolidation of EU resources and bold investments in military modernization, infrastructure, EU external border protection, and continued support for Ukraine.
The President reaffirmed Lithuania’s unwavering support for Ukraine, stating that bolstering Ukraine’s military strength and maintaining continued assistance are key to deterring Russian aggression.
Gitanas Nausėda expressed gratitude to the Polish President for his long-standing partnership and steadfast commitment to regional security: “Our nations know what freedom is—and the cost at which it comes.”
