According to the President, the Constitutional Court of Ukraine today plays an important role in strengthening the country's judicial system and independence of judges. The Constitutional Court must be the body which defends democracy in the country and is trusted by people.
The President underlined that the legal reforms now underway in Ukraine would not only allow more transparency and depoliticizing of the legal system, but will also contribute to strengthening democracy in this country. The implemented reforms will help ensure the rule of law and improve the protection of human rights as well as step up transparency of the judiciary. Lithuania is ready to offer its expert assistance to Ukraine.
Ukraine has already adopted several anti-corruption laws, also the law on the prosecutor's office which is one of the basic laws in reforming Ukraine's legal system.
The upcoming early elections to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine were also discussed at the meeting. The President wished successful preparations and smooth election process. Lithuania will send several dozens of observers to these elections.
