The Director of the Administration of the Self-government of Vilnius District Liucina Kotlovska has been accused for bilingual plates (in Lithuanian and Polish) with street names placed on private houses for several years. Therefore, just like the Director of the Administration of the Self-government of Šalčininkai District Boleslav Daškevič, she has suffered financial repressions, bad media coverage and had to attend the court trials.
Meanwhile, the Government representative withdrew his complaint at the trial hearing on 20th October, stating that his requests were fulfilled because there were road signs in national state language placed on the sidewalks. In turn media speculations about the removal of bilingual signs from private buildings are incorrect. Bilingual signs are still there.
Surprising, however, is the fact that the Government representative withdrew his complaint only now. Road signs in national state language were placed on the sidewalks in Vilnius and Šalčininkai districts already 3-4 years ago. However, this did not stop him from hipocritical accusations, from making L. Kotlovska attend various court hearings or from public escalation of the problem.
Thanks to principled position and determination Polish community has won a great victory - bilingual signs remained and Poles are no longer persecuted for displaying the street names in their native language.
Taking into account the fact that such decision could have been made three or four years ago one question raises to our minds: who will be responsible for the lost time, shattered nerves and for creating a bad image of national minorities in public?
