Ceasefire in Gaza
Reacting to the ceasefire agreement in Gaza that came into effect on Sunday, 19 January, and the release of the first three hostages, President Metsola said it was the “breakthrough that we all hoped for and that so many needed. It is what this Parliament called for.” She said that it should act as a “catalyst that changes despair to hope, that becomes the stepping stone to lasting stability, rebuilding and a surge in aid that allows real prospect of peace in the region.” The priority now is to ensure the agreement holds, she added, so that “its aims are met, that will allow the conflict to stop, get aid in, and get the remaining hostages out. The day after must bring new hope, and Europe is ready to play its part.”
Inauguration of Donald Trump
Speaking on the day Donald Trump is inaugurated for his second term as US President, President Metsola extended her best wishes to the American people as they begin this new chapter. “The bond between Europe and the United States has been a cornerstone of peace, security and prosperity for decades. It will not be without its challenges but I know that Europe will be ready to work for a positive outcome for all. Today, the geopolitical realities we all face will require a renewed transatlantic alliance guided by our shared values,” she said. “Europe stands ready to work together to strengthen our bond as friends and as partners to shape a world of stability, opportunity and hope.”
Anniversary of the death of former EP President David Sassoli
Speaking on the third anniversary of the death of former European Parliament President David Sassoli, President Metsola said that her predecessor was a European leader, a champion of democracy, and above all a dear friend. “David believed deeply in a Europe that could be united in solidarity and which would leave no one behind,” she added.
