Bogdan Zdrojewski, Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from Poland, was elected as the Chair of the Delegation while Valdemar Tomaševski and Andrejs Mamikins (Latvia) were elected as Vice-Chairs. It has to be mentioned that Valdemar Tomaševski was a Vice-Chair of the Delegation also during the previous term. Lithuanian MEP Bronis Ropė is also working in the Delegation for relation with Belarus.
The Delegation for relations with Belarus was established in 2004, following the fifth enlargement of the European Union, which made Belarus a direct EU neighbour. The main task of the Delegation is to maintain a dialogue with Belarus within the framework of the multilateral dimension of the Eastern Partnership. One of the aims of the Delegation are the negotiations on visa facilitation – this may bring benefits for Belarussian society and neighboring countries, including Lithuania, by increasing cross-border contacts. Belarus is covered by the European Neighbourhood Policy. The country is also a member of the Eastern Partnership initiative, a policy launched by the EU in May 2009.
