According to the Lithuanian Central Electoral Commission, a total of 1,524 councilors will be elected during next year's election. In three Lithuanian municipalities - Jonava, Šilutė and Birštonas - there will be two councilors less elected due to the decrease in the number of residents compared with the local elections of 2011. In turn, local government council of Vilnius District will increase by 4 councilors.
Zenonas Vaigauskas, Chairman of the Lithuanian Central Election Committee, reports that the number of councilors will change not only because of demographic changes, but also because of changes in the method of counting the residents in local governments.
According to the mayor of Vilnius District Marija Rekst, larger number of councilors in local government of Vilnius District will provide better representation of the population what will effectively defend their interests.
'We are delighted with this news, because the more minds, the more good ideas for the residents. People of our region will have more representatives who will defend and represent their interests as from next year,' said Marija Rekst.
