“We need to work on generating the required capabilities and implementation of plans. Capability cooperation is critical for strengthening regional security and the ability to strengthen regional security and response to potential threats,” said Minister of National Defence L. Kasčiūnas.
The upcoming NATO Summit in Washington and Lithuania’s aims were among the most important topics of the meeting conducted today. According to Minister, Lithuania will work to facilitate agreement on the NATO regional defence plans and implementation of the Rotational NATO Air Defence Model, two cornerstone capabilities that will significantly advance the Baltic security.
“The role of Germany as guarantor of security and defence in the region is increasing – it is one of Lithuania’s most important Allies whose contribution to security and stability of Lithuania and the Baltic region is critical. Its decision to station a German brigade in Lithuania reflects the exceptional leadership of Germany. The German brigade is a vital element of the regional NATO defence plans,” said L. Kasčiūnas meeting with the German Defence Minister.
Minister noted that Lithuania was looking into possibilities to acquire the IRIS-T medium-range air defence systems which had been tested and approved in Ukraine against the Russian aggression.
Lithuania prioritizes military mobility and aims to cooperate with Germany and other countries in the region which would host force movement towards our state. In 2023-2025 Lithuania is going to invest EUR 240 million in dual purpose (military mobility) infrastructure.
Both Ministers agreed that assistance to Ukraine could not be postponed and strengthening air defence was the most urgent priority. L. Kasčiūnas stressed that Lithuania supported and contributed to the German urgent air defence initiative, as well as other German initiatives in support of UKRAine.
