In 2019, the strengths of the rivals were more evenly matched, at which time they both garnered around 31 percent of the voters' votes each in the first round.
Lawyer Ignas Vėgėlė came third (12.4 percent), former MP Remigijus Žemaitaitis was fourth (9.3 percent), Eduardas Vaitkus was fifth (7.3 percent), followed by Dainius Žalimas (3.54 percent), Andrius Mazuronis (1.38 percent) and Giedrimas Jeglinskas (1.35 percent).
A total of 59.4 percent of voters voted in Sunday's presidential election and citizenship referendum. A higher turnout in the first round of presidential elections was only recorded in 1993 and 1997, when 78.6 percent and 71.45 percent of voting citizens respectively voted.
The second round of the presidential election will be held on 26 May.
