The meeting of the UN Security Council was held at the initiative of U.S. President Barack Obama. Lithuania was elected to serve on the Security Council for a two-year term last year and is one of its 15 members. At this meeting, a resolution was adopted committing 193 UN member states to reinforce efforts to combat international terrorism.
"International terrorism is expanding and intensifying. Open wars in various places of the world have come to resemble the fight between different ideologies and even civilizations. We see such tendencies not only in the Middle East with hate ideology spreading there, but also in Europe. The borders of our continent are arbitrarily redrawn, undeclared war is fought, and democratic institutions are destroyed. International terrorism is rapidly becoming a global issue. Lithuania supports all endeavors to curb the spread of terrorism," the President said in her speech.
The President underlined that to stop brutal terrorist acts of ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) in the Middle East it was necessary to back the creation of Iraqi institutions, improve humanitarian situation in this country and help the states in the region counter the threat of terrorism.
The resolution adopted at the UN Security Council meeting committed the international community to strengthen efforts to fight the spreading international terrorism. This resolution not only condemned international terrorism, it also expanded responsibilities of member states in tackling the threat posed by terrorism. A precise definition of international terrorists was given in the resolution, and all countries were invited to take measures to prevent terrorism domestically and adopt appropriate laws designed to restrict the movement of terrorists and financing of their activities.
The member states agreed to share information more actively and investigate criminal terrorist offences together, also to strengthen cooperation between the countries and curb the way to employing and arming international terrorists as well as sponsoring their activities and movement.
