With the signature of this agreement, the two institutions seek to strengthen their cooperation and formalise their joint commitment to inform citizens about the European elections and the importance of voting.
The Memorandum of Understanding outlines key areas where collaboration between the European Parliament and the European Economic and Social Committee will be intensified, with a specific focus on communication strategies and related outreach activities. Both institutions recognize the pivotal role effective communication plays in engaging citizens and fostering democratic participation.
“With only one hundred days remaining until the 2024 European elections, the signature of this agreement with the European Economic and Social Committee symbolises our collective pledge to ensuring citizens are well-informed and engaged in the democratic process” said European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.
The President of the European Economic and Social Committee, Oliver Röpke said: “This is an election for which Europe cannot afford to fail. The EESC will fully mobilise its extensive network, spanning across the EU and representing employers, workers, and civil society organisations, for them to fully play their role. Today's agreement is a crucial step in generating momentum leading up to the 2024 European elections.”
Background
The European Economic and Social Committee provides a forum for consultation and dialogue among representatives from the various components of organised civil society. It provides institutional representation for the EU's employers, workers and social, occupational, economic and cultural civil society organisations, thus ensuring that these organisations and their networks have their say in Europe's development, and helping optimise the quality of EU policies and legislation.
