Over the three-day conference Minister met with Secretary of State for Defence of the United Kingdom Grant Shapps, Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the UK Parliament Alicia Kearns, Minister of Defence of Armenia Suren Papikyan, Vice-President for Values and Transparency at the European Commission Vera Jourova, member of the Bundestag Roderich Kiesewetter. A. Anušauskas also met with members of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Minister took part in a panel with U.S. military and political leadership representatives organized by former U.S. Secretary of Defence General Jim Mattis. A. Anušauskas also attended a Ministers’ panel on global challenges.
At the meetings Minister A. Anušauskas underscored the importance of support to Ukraine and a strong NATO signal about its membership prospects. “We need Ukraine in the NATO Alliance. It is the best European security guarantee in the long-term one can get.”
Minister also noted the importance of the transatlantic unity and pointed out Lithuania’s ongoing effort to strengthen its military capabilities and continuously increase the defence spending.
Vice Minster Greta Monika Tučkutė attended the Munich Security Conference and the Cybersecurity Conference in its margins. Saturday Vice Minister had a bilateral meeting with Vice Minister of Defense Shingo Miyake on strengthening defence cooperation. Vice Minister also had a series of meetings with cybersecurity and defence industry representatives on the sidelines of both conferences.
Held for the 60th time this year, the Munich Security Conference was established in 1963. It is an annual high-level debate platform for addressing key foreign and security policy challenges of our times.
