Recognizing that failure to confront Russia’s aggression would manifest in new outbreaks in Europe or other continents, Lithuania is determined to continue to provide support and urge partners to step up, particularly in the military aid, said Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė.
The active and long-term support of Ukraine by countries like Lithuania and Latvia plays a crucial role in preventing fatigue, both in supporting Ukrainians and seeking Russian accountability for crimes and in tightening of international sanctions against the aggressor country and its accomplice, Belarusian regime.
The parties also discussed joint infrastructure projects, including the synchronization of the Baltic electricity grids with continental Europe and the progress of the Rail Baltica project. Prime Ministers Šimonytė and Silina highlighted the importance of further close cooperation between national electricity transmission system operators to ensure the successful synchronization by the agreed date in February 2025.
In discussing Rail Baltica, it was emphasized that it goes beyond being merely a transportation link connecting the three Baltic States. It is, in fact, a vital railway line crucial for military mobility. Its timely implementation is seen as a significant contribution to enhancing regional security.
The leaders of the Lithuanian and Latvian governments highlighted the new railway route linking Vilnius and Riga as a successful example of cooperation between the two countries, with benefits extending to the residents of both nations.
Starting today, the LTG Group passenger transport company will run trains daily on the direct route: Vilnius-Kaišiadorys-Šiauliai-Joniškis-Jelgava-Riga. The LTG Link train departing from Vilnius is expected to reach Riga in approximately 4 hours and 15 minutes.
This new route ensures convenient travel for all passengers, including individuals with special needs.
