Speaking on the revision of the multiannual financial framework, the President stressed the importance of providing long-term support to Ukraine, including funds for maintaining Ukraine’s economic and social stability, for its reconstruction and for military support.
Furthermore, it is important to prioritize the issue of ensuring military mobility across the European Union, especially for the EU countries bordering Russia. The President underlined the need to increase EU funding for developing military mobility and strengthening industrial capacities for defense.
“The current geopolitical and security situation demands that Europe should stay vigilant and united. We must continue working towards enhancing our security and investing in defense and military mobility. This is an investment in our peaceful future. Our focus must remain on supporting Ukraine until its victory. It is important to understand that by supporting Ukraine, we ensure our own security,” the President said.
Gitanas Nausėda emphasized the need to maintain and accelerate the speed and effectiveness of military assistance as the path to a quicker end of the war. The President stated that we must help Ukrainians prepare for the upcoming winter and address the needs of their armed forces.
The President also stressed the need to increase pressure on Russia by tightening the EU sanctions policy. According to Gitanas Nausėda, it is imperative to adopt the 12th package of sanctions as early as possible, which should cover dual-use products, including drones, as well as industrial, nuclear and information technology sectors.
The President also addressed the issue of using Russia’s frozen funds to rebuild Ukraine. According to Gitanas Nausėda, substantial progress is needed in delivering on the proposal to use the revenues earned on Russia’s immobilized assets for rebuilding Ukraine. However, this would represent just the initial step towards the ultimate goal of promptly establishing a comprehensive legal mechanism to utilize all frozen Russian assets for the reconstruction of Ukraine.
