‘Amidst Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine and its disregard for our democratic principles, it is imperative that we respond with a resolute commitment to uphold our strategic autonomy from those who flout the norms of international conduct. Therefore, it is particularly important for democratic allies such as Lithuania and Germany to deepen their ties and cooperation in security, energy, and other relevant areas,’ said Prime Minister Šimonytė.
A substantial part of the German rotational forces currently stationed in Lithuania originate from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. According to the Head of Government, Lithuania is investing heavily in the host country support system and is prepared to further improve conditions for the Allied troops in Lithuania.
It has been underlined that democracies need to seek energy independence from autocratic regimes and to avoid past mistakes, such as the Nord Stream. The development of alternative gas supply routes and the development of renewable energies, including in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, is therefore a security issue, and the EU‘s green course is not only a climate change issue but also a geopolitical one.
It has been also pointed out that Lithuania has experience in the development of liquefied natural gas infrastructure, which it is ready to share if needed.
