The open learning website “School of Citizenship”, launched at the initiative of the President, is designed for civic education, expanding knowledge about statehood, and building civic awareness. The website’s content is based on the concept developed at the Center for Civil Education through educational projects. The website offers a wide range of visual and audio material, over 200 texts, interactive tests, educational games, and tasks. It is aligned with civic national programmes and offers an educational platform to teachers, school students and all Lithuanian citizens.
The President, addressing more than 100 teachers and NGO representatives gathered in the White Hall of the Presidential Palace, expressed his hope that the “School of Citizenship” would be used as an additional tool for civic education in schools. “We often say that freedom is not a given. This message is for all of us. We need to learn how to defend our freedom and our country, identify threats and disinformation, think critically, and build resilience,” the President said, emphasizing the importance of civic lessons.
The event included a debate with the President which focused on strengthening civic awareness, patriotism, unity, and freedom. Taking part in the exchange of ideas and insights were Irena Andrukaitienė, signatory of the Act on the Re-establishment of Lithuanian Independence, Vytautas Chadzevičius, student at Antakalnis Gymnasium, Vilius Vaivada and Mantas Kairys, cadets at the General Jonas Žemaitis Lithuanian Military Academy, Renatas Žyla, former expatriate, and Giedrė Žickytė, film director. The discussion was moderated by Laurynas Kudijanovas, a teacher of history and civic education.
“School of Citizenship” is a Nordplus Horizontal project initiated by President Gitanas Nausėda and implemented by the Office of the President in partnership with the National Education Agency (Lithuania), the European Wergeland Centre (Norway) and the Riga Lithuanian Secondary School (Latvia).
