Gitanas Nausėda underlined the role of the CoE in documenting evidence of Russia’s war crimes in Ukraine and the efforts to set up a registry to store evidence of the consequences of aggression. The President welcomed the CoE’s decision to expel Russia from this organization and stressed that this principled position should serve as an example for other international organizations.
“In order to ensure that the crimes of aggression Russia is currently committing in Ukraine do not recur, their perpetrators and architects must be held accountable. Evidence of each crime must be documented, and not a single Russia’s crime in Ukraine must be forgotten. A special tribunal would be the best instrument to assess the crimes of aggression committed by the Russian regime in Ukraine,” the President pointed out.
Gitanas Nausėda added that Lithuania would continue to actively raise the issue of the brutal human rights violations committed by Russia in Ukraine and demand accountability of both the perpetrators and the instigators of these crimes. According to President Gitanas Nausėda, the CoE could make a significant contribution with its expertise to the establishment of a special tribunal to investigate Russia’s crimes.
