The President thanked the Netherlands for its contribution to regional security. According to the President, the presence of Dutch troops on the territory of Lithuania demonstrated that the Allies stood united in their commitment to defend each other.
“The Royal Netherlands Air Force has been contributing to the NATO Baltic Air Policing mission since 2005. Lithuanian and Dutch troops train and exercise together. I hope excellent cooperation ties maintained by our two countries in the field of defense will continue and grow stronger,” the President said.
The President and the King focused on security issues and the course of the Russian war in Ukraine. Gitanas Nausėda stressed that while the Ukrainian people are fighting back heroically, the Allies have the primary task to give them all the assistance they need to defeat the aggressor.
“Ukraine’s victory is the only acceptable scenario. It is the path to restoring peace in Europe. Allied military support must be delivered quickly - every day of delay costs lives,” the President said.
The President also underscored the need to hold Russia accountable for its crimes of aggression committed in Ukraine. According to Gitanas Nausėda, the establishment of a special tribunal to investigate Russia’s crimes in Ukraine would make it possible to bring to justice not only those who directly committed them, but also those who gave the orders.
During his meeting with King Willem-Alexander, the President underlined that Lithuania and the Netherlands enjoyed friendly and dynamic bilateral relations in culture, trade, science, and education – which Lithuania truly values and is ready to expand.
