Speaking at the European Council, the Lithuanian leader stressed the need to strengthen the EU’s commitment to developing green and environmentally friendly technologies. According to the Gitanas Nausėda, the EU should move faster towards an economic model that contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions and environmentally neutral production and consumption. The President stressed that the initial Green Deal Industrial Plan presented by the EC will stimulate the necessary changes in the regulatory environment, investment financing and the development of the necessary skills.
“Lithuania has a strong tradition of industry, entrepreneurs who adapt quickly to a changing environment, and talented workforce. All this gives us the opportunity to become a flagship in the development of products and services of the green industry ecosystem for the whole of Europe,” President Gitanas Nausėda pointed out.
The President welcomed the EC’s initial proposals for the development of the Green Deal industrial agenda, whilst underlining the need to respect the EU’s principles of equality, economic inclusion and the strengthening of the internal market. According to Gitanas Nausėda, additional decisions on state aid schemes should be temporary and targeted, and should not contribute to widening the innovation gap between Member States.
“In strengthening the EU’s green industry, we must ensure that all countries are involved in the green transformation and development of industry on equal terms, without creating imbalances between larger and smaller countries, between large and small businesses. Aid and support measures must provide equal opportunities for all businesses, regardless of the country or region in which they are based,” Gitanas Nausėda spoke.
