During the meeting, the President stressed the importance of mobilizing the international community to establish a special tribunal to investigate Russia’s atrocities in Ukraine.
Gitanas Nausėda and Laura Codruța Kövesi also discussed the implementation of sanctions against Russia, the need to prevent all ways of circumventing them, as well as effective investigation of violations of the sanctions against Russia and Belarus.
“The pressure on Russia needs to continue to increase and I very much hope that a tenth sanctions package will be adopted soon. However, it is important to minimize the chances of circumventing or avoiding sanctions. Effective implementation of sanctions is crucial. I am therefore in favor of reviewing the mandate of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office to enable it to investigate violations of the sanctions imposed on Russia,” the President pointed out.
Gitanas Nausėda and the European Chief Prosecutor also addressed the issue of transparency in the use of EU funds at EU and national level. According to the President, it is important to ensure that funds are used transparently and efficiently and that the national interests of Member States are properly protected.
