The resolutions sets the legal basis and the maximum number of military and civilian personnel of the National Defence System that can be attached to the new EU Military Assistance Mission Ukraine (EUMAM Ukraine) and international Operation Interflex for training Ukrainian military personnel in the United Kingdom. Up to 40 Lithuanians will be able to join EUMAM and up to 25 – Operation Interflex.
“Allied efforts to provide more support to Ukraine with military training are increasing, new assistance to Ukraine missions are launched. Lithuania will contribute actively to them because our security depends on Ukraine’s security. We will support Ukraine until it wins and when that happens, we will train their troops further,” says Minister of National Defence Arvydas Anušauskas.
The Seimas’ resolution also establishes that the Lithuanian National Military Training Operation approved by the Seimas in 2017 for training the Armed Forces of Ukraine can be carried in other EU and NATO member states if they invite Lithuanian military instructors to join the training conducted for the Armed Forces of Ukraine in their territories. The operation is mandated to be manned by 60 military and civilian military personnel of the National Defence System at the maximum.
In 2023 the Lithuanian Armed Forces will deliver training for approx. 1,500 troops of Ukraine, 1,100 of them in Lithuania. Part of the training planned in 2023 will be conducted as part of the new EUMAM Ukraine. In total, approx. 15 thousand troops of Ukraine are planned to undergo training in EU member states.
