The President and the ambassadors discussed the forthcoming European Council meeting, support for Ukraine towards winning the war against Russia, efforts to strengthen own security and defense, lowering the prices of energy resources, increasing the competitiveness of the European Union and Lithuania, and other important issues on the European agenda.
“Military, financial, humanitarian, and other support for Ukraine remains our core focus. We must do everything we can to help the Ukrainians achieve victory. Only this will guarantee peace in Europe, peace for all of us,” Gitanas Nausėda underlined.
According to the President, the EU has in its hands the instruments that can help contain Russia and prevent its future aggressions. Gitanas Nausėda expressed his hope that the 9th package of sanctions would be adopted in the near future, and stressed the need to hold the aggressor accountable for the crimes committed. A special tribunal to investigate Russia’s war crimes would be an appropriate instrument to implement justice, stressed the President.
“We look forward to a results-oriented NATO Summit in Vilnius next July. Our priorities are the implementation of the decisions taken in the Madrid Summit on forward defense and the strengthening of NATO’s eastern flank, political and practical support for Ukraine and its Euro-Atlantic aspirations,” President Gitanas Nausėda said.
“Another important area where we need to pull together is Russia’s disinformation, propaganda and its frantic attempts to rewrite history. The EU institutions have to adopt a pro-active approach to ensure that both Nazi and Communist regimes receive a proper evaluation. This is important for the truth, for history and for future generations,” the President added.
Speaking on the competitiveness of Lithuania and the European Union, Gitanas Nausėda noted that it was necessary to further strengthen the EU’s internal market, the technological base of industry, and participation in industrial supply chains. “Europe needs to work effectively with its partners in securing the supply of raw materials, developing global standards, and strengthening transatlantic economic ties,” President Gitanas Nausėda pointed out.
The President also thanked the Czech Presidency for their ability to distinguish what is crucial, react quickly and push for decisions at EU level.
The President’s meetings with ambassadors of EU countries, now a tradition, take place twice a year, and discuss progress on the priorities of the Community as a whole and of the country holding the Presidency.
