Gitanas Nausėda stressed the importance of unity and cooperation between the Baltic states on security issues. According to the President, coordination and speaking with one voice help the Baltic countries to work successfully with their allies and thus enhance regional security. The President underlined that it was necessary to jointly implement the decisions of the NATO Madrid Summit in order to strengthen NATO’s eastern flank.
President Gitanas Nausėda and Speaker Edvards Smiltēns also discussed energy independence and energy security issues. The Lithuanian leader noted the need to seek solutions at EU level that would reduce prices for consumers in the short term. According to the President, energy security should also remain at the top of the Baltic countries’ agendas.
“Full energy independence from Russia is a guarantee of stability and security for our countries and for the entire region. Synchronization with continental European grids and full disconnection from Russia is an important task that we have to implement as soon as possible,” the President pointed out.
Gitanas Nausėda also stressed the importance of joint infrastructure projects between Lithuania and Latvia. According to the President, it was necessary to consolidate efforts to complete the Rail Baltica project in the shortest possible time, as regional transport infrastructure is an essential component of security.
