On behalf of the Lithuanian people, the President of Lithuania addressed the Polish people who gathered in large numbers at Piłsudski Square in Warsaw. Every Pole cherished the tradition of resistance to injustice and love of freedom, handed down from generation to generation, the Lithuanian leader spoke. According to Gitanas Nausėda, Lithuanians also cherished the love of freedom and independence. The President stressed that these were the values that both countries shared, inherited from the mutual past.
“Since very long ago, our countries have been united by their strong commitment to defend the values of Western civilization. The friendship between Lithuania and Poland, born in Krėva, tempered with blood in the Battle of Žalgiris and consolidated in Lublin, spread – and still spreads the hope of freedom and justice,” Gitanas Nausėda spoke in Warsaw.
According to the President, the two countries learned very well the lesson of history that an aggressor cannot be appeased and must be stopped decisively. That is why we do not tolerate attempts to redraw the borders of sovereign states by force, and rush to the aid of Ukraine – under Russian attack – fighting for our freedom too. We stand steadfast together to defend the historical truth against lies and disinformation.
“Today, Lithuania and Poland are inseparable strategic partners. Together we are members of the European Union and NATO. Together we foster political, economic, and cultural ties and invest in the security of our region. Whatever the challenges we faced – together or apart – we never succumbed. We did not abandon our values. We kept faith in the future. Together we feel – and are – stronger,” Gitanas Nausėda emphasized.
The President of Lithuania and his spouse also attended the Mass celebrated on the occasion of Poland’s national day.
