Addressing the European leaders, Gitanas Nausėda said that the current energy crisis required decisive and rapid solutions at the EU level as national solutions were not sufficient.
The President welcomed the European Commission’s proposals on making joint gas purchases, initiating solidarity agreements, creating a new gas price index, and reducing gas demand. However, he said, they are not sufficient to ease the financial burden on households and businesses.
The President supported proposals to cap the price of gas, decouple electricity and gas prices and create an EU financial support instrument.
"People must feel the positive effects of proposed solutions this winter, not the next year," the President said.
The energy debate will continue next week at the Council of Energy Ministers in Brussels.
