In the context of the invasion of Ukraine and soaring energy and food prices, Parliament President Roberta Metsola opened the debate in Strasbourg saying: "I think our message today will be that Europe will respond."
In the debate following Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's speech, MEPs welcomed further help for Ukraine and plans to deal with the energy crisis, including a cap on revenues for companies producing low-cost electricity. However, they called for bolder action to better support both Ukraine and Europeans and criticised the Commission's lack of reaction to the rise of extremism and disrespect for the rule of law.
