Addressing EU leaders, the President underlined that this meeting of the European Council was a historic opportunity for the EU to send a strong political message to Ukraine.
“For months now, the Ukrainian people have been fighting heroically against the Kremlin’s military aggression. This is not only a fight for Ukraine’s independence and sovereignty, but also a struggle for democracy and the freedom to decide for themselves on the future of their country. Ukraine has chosen the European path and our common values. It has already shown that it is prepared to fight for it with its own blood. Ukraine’s future lies within the European Union,” the President pointed out.
Gitanas Nausėda stressed that Lithuania also supported granting EU candidate status to Moldova and Georgia’s prospects for European integration.
At the European Council meeting, the President of Lithuania pointed out that it was necessary to place special emphasis on assessing the impact of sanctions on Russia, to prevent attempts to circumvent the sanctions, and to start discussing a new package of sanctions against the aggressor. Gitanas Nausėda added that Russia’s hostilities in Ukraine were not over and its aggressive rhetoric towards other countries, including Lithuania, was intensifying.
