The summit of nine Central European heads of state focused on the situation in Ukraine. Among the other issues on the agenda were preparations for the NATO summit scheduled for the beginning of September in Wales.
According to the President, in light of the ongoing brutal aggression in Eastern Ukraine, NATO needs to make a realistic reassessment of the new military threats and take all possible steps to ensure the security in the region.
The states located in Russia's and Ukraine's neighborhood are connected by their shared interest to reinforce the defense of the region, the President said. Therefore, they made a joint effort at the NATO summit to upgrade the existing defense plans and have long-term regional security measures put in place.
The Warsaw summit addressed the financial commitments of NATO member states for improving defense capabilities. This past March, political parties of Lithuania pledged to increase defense spending every year to 2% of the GDP by 2020. The Lithuanian defense budget for 2014 has already been enlarged by 130 million litas.
