During the meeting, the President pointed out that Lithuania had already cut off the imports of Russian gas and oil, but was still linked to Russia’s electricity grids. According to the President, Lithuania’s ambition is to complete the synchronization project ahead of schedule and get connected to the European electricity grid sooner than planned. The President stressed that the European Commission’s support – political, technical, and financial – was extremely important in this process.
“Energy independence from Russia needs to become a strategic goal for the European Union. Synchronization is an important part of this process. Getting connected to the European electricity grid as soon as possible would boost the energy security of the Baltic States and the EU as a whole. We should leave no room for an aggressor to use energy as a tool for political manipulation,” the President underlined.
In his meeting with Kadri Simson, Gitanas Nausėda stressed the importance of removing infrastructure bottlenecks, securing gas reserves, and investing consistently in renewable energy sources as part of the EU’s efforts to increase its independence from Russian energy imports. The President highlighted the urgency for the EU to address the issue of growing energy prices for the public and their impact on the prices of other goods. In this context, President Gitanas Nausėda underscored the need to ensure diversification and security of energy supply. According to the President, minimizing dependence on gas and increasing the share of renewable energy sources in the energy systems of the countries would help tackle the issues of prices and security.
