In a late-night meeting, European leaders agreed on the sixth package of sanctions against Russia, which includes sanctions against individuals within the Kremlin regime, Sberbank and other Russian banks, oil supplies by sea, as well as Russian propaganda channels RTR Planeta, Rossiya 24, TV Centre International. The sanctions also cover specific Belarusian companies and individuals.
Speaking at the working session, the Gitanas Nausėda stressed that, as the war against Ukraine continues, the European Union must step up pressure on Russia and block the possibility of further offensive. The President urged European leaders not to hold any hope that Russia would change its behavior, to approve the proposed sixth round of sanctions and to start preparing a seventh package, which would include a full embargo on Russian fossil fuels. The President also urged to use Russia’s financial assets frozen in the European Union for the reconstruction of Ukraine
"The fact that we have reached an agreement today is yet another proof of Europe's unity and ability to find solutions. However, we need to continue to tighten sanctions against Russia, strengthen military support to Ukraine, mobilize funding for rebuilding the country, and send a clear political message at the next European Council meeting to grant EU candidate status to Ukraine," the President said.
