The conversation focused on the tense security situation in the region, Russia’s military build-up on the border with Ukraine and on the territory of Belarus. The President stressed that we had to be prepared for all possible scenarios, but the most important thing now was to continue diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation.
Gitanas Nausėda also drew the European Council President’s attention to the fact that Russia was increasing its forces in Belarus, which posed additional threats to our security. “That is why we are mobilizing allies to strengthen NATO’s defense capabilities in Lithuania and the Baltic region,” the President said.
Gitanas Nausėda also emphasized the readiness to impose additional tough sanctions, both individual and sectoral, on Russia. The President underlined that the European Union’s and NATO allies’ unity as well as solidarity with and support to Ukraine were of utmost importance amid growing geopolitical tensions.
