According to the Lithuanian President, the situation on the EU’s border with Belarus remains tense due to irregular migration flows. It cannot be excluded that irregular migrants’ attempts to storm the border may be repeated.
During the conversation, the President emphasized that the escalating situation on the border with Belarus was not only a problem for Poland or Lithuania but it was a challenge for the EU as a whole; therefore, it was necessary to implement the decisions taken at the European Council on October 21-22 as soon as possible: to ensure a real protection of the EU’s external border, to speed up the process of reviewing and amending the EU’s migration and asylum policies and legislation as well as to secure EU funding for the construction of a physical barrier at the EU’s external border.
The Presidents agreed that the EU’s unity and ability to swiftly implement European leaders’ decisions were vital in these difficult times. Gitanas Nausėda stressed that Lithuania looked forward to Finland's support and cooperation in countering the hybrid attack by Belarus.
The Presidents also discussed broader aspects of regional security and the most pressing issues on the EU agenda.
