According to the President of Lithuania, the situation at the EU’s eastern border is continuously deteriorating and the scale of a hybrid attack is expanding; therefore, it is important to demonstrate solidarity with Poland and to take decisive action at the EU level. The President emphasized that the current tense situation at Poland’s border with Belarus demanded a strong response from the EU.
“In the face of the hybrid attack, we need to take immediate action at the EU level to prevent further escalation of the situation. What is happening at Poland’s border with Belarus is not only Poland’s problem – it is the concern of the entire EU,” the President said.
Gitanas Nausėda stressed the need to start implementing the agreements of the European Council of October 21-22 as soon as possible. It is necessary to speed up the process of reviewing the EU’s migration and asylum policy, to ensure the EU’s involvement in the construction of a physical barrier at the EU’s external border and to extend sanctions against the Belarusian regime. The President suggested to Charles Michel that he put migration on the agenda of the December European Council.
