The President and the OECD Secretary-General discussed the importance of cooperation, Lithuania’s success in managing the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, vaccination, structural reforms, and environmental issues.
The President emphasized that Lithuania had ambitious goals for delivering the Green Deal and was working to engage society, public institutions, business, and non-governmental entities in the process. “We have initiated and the Seimas is currently deliberating a law that would make it mandatory to consider environmental and climate aspects when passing legislation. It would help to significantly reduce environmental impact and ensure interdisciplinary approach,” the President said.
He further underlined that Lithuania was ready to seek regional leadership in environmental protection and to become a green ambassador in Eastern Partnership countries.
Gitanas Nausėda and Mathias Cormann also discussed post-pandemic economic recovery. The President underlined that even though Lithuania’s economic performance was very good within the context of other countries, it was necessary to protect the economy from overheating as well as to seek sustainable and stable growth.
“We need to focus our economic policy on increasing investment and productivity, and to maintain a rapid but sustainable wage growth,” the President said.
Gitanas Nausėda expressed delight Lithuania had received an invitation to become member of the International Energy Agency (IEA) this past June, pointing out that Lithuania highly appreciated the OECD’s contribution to its structural reforms.
