In his speech, Gitanas Nausėda will underscore to the High-Level Forum participants that the progress in implementing the Agenda for Sustainable Development is substantial but still insufficient. The Sustainable Development Agenda consists of 17 Goals, agreed upon by the states of the world and interlinked with the goals in the areas of social exclusion, education, environment protection, climate change, innovations, economic growth, equality and others.
President Gitanas Nausėda will highlight to the UN member states an enormous importance of solidarity: “We will need this solidarity to deal with another major pressing issue – climate change. We need to take immediate actions. While restarting our economies, we must invest in climate neutrality, the protection of biodiversity and its restoration,” the President said.
This year, some discussions at the UN are held remotely due to the risks associated with the pandemic.
On Monday, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, the President of Lithuania will have bilateral meetings with the leaders of other countries. The aim of the meeting with President Vjosa Osmani-Sadriu of Kosovo is to express support to the independence of Kosovo and EU integration aspirations as well as to encourage Kosovo to continue the necessary legal reforms in the areas of the rule of law, fundamental rights, justice, fight against corruption, and organized crime.
At the meeting with Prime Minister of Norway Erna Solberg, the President will discuss matters of regional security, the challenge of illegal migration as well as response to the hybrid attack organized by the Belarus regime.
On his first day of the visit to the U.S.A., the President also attended a commemoration ceremony to honor the victims of 9/11 attacks.
