President Nausėda highlighted the fact of the arrival of more than four thousand irregular migrants across the external EU-Belarus border since the beginning of the year. Although the situation on the Lithuanian border has now stabilized, the Belarus regime is redirecting the migratory flows to the neighboring countries – Latvia and Poland.
According to the President, the current developments at the external EU-Belarus border point to the need to strengthen the protection of the EU frontiers and to amend the legislation on the migration policy and on the protection of the external border of the European Union.
“It is necessary to bolster the EU’s involvement in the implementation of migration and border security policies, including financial contribution in securing its frontiers. In this debate, the role of the European Parliament is crucial. I have already spoken about the necessary changes with the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission," Gitanas Nausėda said.
President Nausėda underscored that the Belarus regime in Lithuania’s neighborhood continued on its path towards self-isolation and revanchist policy with regard to Lithuania and the European Union as a whole. According to the President of Lithuania, there is a need for the principled and united EU stance vis-à-vis Belarus. In July, President Gitanas Nausėda discussed these issues with Charles Michel, President of the European Council, and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, who were on a visit to Lithuania.
The President of Lithuania and the President of the European Parliament also discussed relations with Russia, the issues of the unsafe Ostrovets nuclear power plant and preventing the supply of its electricity into the internal market of the EU, strategic guidelines of the Eastern Partnership, and situation in Afghanistan.
