During the conversation, President Nausėda highlighted the deteriorating situation of migration across the Lithuania-Belarus border and informed the German Chancellor that Lithuania had already asked the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) and the European Asylum Support Office for assistance. At the moment, additional border surveillance systems are being installed, capacities to receive refugees are being expanded, additional accommodation facilities are being set up and it is aimed to speed up the asylum procedures.
The President underscored that the actions of Belarus led to the 19-times increase of illegal border crossings, compared to 2020, and talked about the need to enhance the protection of the EU’s Eastern border.
The President and the Chancellor have also agreed to resume the discussion on security, defense, EU agenda, and relations with the Eastern neighbors in September, during President Nausėda’s visit to Berlin.
