The President and Fabrice Leggeri exchanged views about specific Frontex actions to strengthen the protection of the Lithuanian state border with Belarus.
Gitanas Nausėda expressed the need for assistance to Lithuania: border guards, interpreter teams, questioning experts, patrol cars, helicopters, and mobile thermal imagers.
The President thanked Mr. Leggeri for Frontex plans to help Lithuania overcome the migratory crisis and stop the influx of illegal migrants caused by hybrid attacks launched by the Belarus regime. This weekend and the next week, reinforcements will be sent to Lithuania: interpreters, staff for working with migrants, and armed patrol guards. A helicopter will fly in from Poland to strengthen the surveillance of Lithuania’s border with Belarus, with another helicopter expected to be sent from Germany.
Lithuania will receive more reinforcement than was promised before July 15.
Considering Lithuania’s request, the Director of Frontex said that he was activating the mechanism for providing emergency border assistance, which will generate the required border protection in a very short period of time.
During their conversation, President Gitanas Nausėda pointed out to the head of Frontex that Lithuania was making every effort and investment to ensure the protection of its national border – which also served as the EU’s external frontier.
