The President expressed Lithuania’s support for the European Union climate change objectives and stressed the importance of establishing legal regulation in accordance with the principles of fairness and solidarity as well as taking into consideration the national specificities of the Member States and sharing the responsibilities for achieving the EU objectives.
“It is in ambitious and coordinated manner, by taking into consideration the national specificities of the member states, that the climate change objectives have to be implemented. For Lithuania, it is paramount to share the commitments based on GDP per capita at current prices,” the President said.
Gitanas Nausėda underscored the need to strengthen the EU’s sectoral measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. “Lithuania is striving to be among the leaders of the EU green transition. We are setting our own ambitious climate change targets to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 70 percent by 2030 and to become a climate-neutral state by 2050”, the President underlined.
Gitanas Nausėda stressed that the EU’s green transition had to be based on clear rules, international environmental and nuclear safety standards.
“The unsafe nuclear power plant in Belarus poses threat to the entire Europe. The EU must take decisive actions in managing the risks associated with the Ostrovets nuclear power plant, that is, demand the highest security standards to be in place, block imports of Belarusian electricity into the EU as well as other sources of financing the regime", Gitanas Nausėda said.
The President highlighted the need to improve the Mobility Package, which is currently hurting the environment and the internal market. The meeting also addressed Lithuania’s participation in the Horizon Europe programme, the promotion and development of innovations in greening and health.
At the meeting with the Vice-President of the Commission, the EU-Russia relations and the need for an ambitious Eastern Partnership initiative were also discussed.
