Also social democrats voted for the deletion of the matters from the agenda although they, among others, prepared one of the two Laws on the Spelling of Names which was to allow the original spelling of names (with non-Lithuanian letters of the Latin alphabet) on the primary page of a passport. The social democrats have repeatedly promised that the draft laws, adoption of which was expected by Poles in Lithuania, would be dealt with as soon as possible.
Members of the Seimas from the EAPL faction are outraged by the fact that their coalitional partners did not keep their word once again and did not acceded to multiple requests of favourable consideration of projects that are important for national communities in Lithuania.
Member Zbignev Jedinski thinks, that disapproval of some members to the issues that are crucial for national minorities proves that they fear to lose part of their electorate.
Just a few days ago, namely on 6 June, representatives of the ruling coalition in Lithuania agreed that they will not interfere with the validation of the proposal of original spelling of names (with non-Lithuanian letters of the Latin alphabet) on the primary page of a passport. Moreover, coalitional partners promised to the EAPL representatives that the Law on National minorities in its 1991 version will be adopted during the current session of the Seimas.
Now there is now Law on National Minorities in Lithuania, as the previous one, which was valid for 20 years, has expired on 1 January 2010.
