‘Lithuanian-Icelandic relations and cooperation in international organizations have been very close for many years; we are like-minded on support for the Eastern Partners and the assessment of Russia’s aggression. We share important common priorities in the areas of security, defence, the green agenda, and digitization. However, one area where we would like to strengthen the cooperation further is the support of the Baltic and Nordic countries for the people of Belarus,’ said Prime Minister Šimonytė.
Iceland, together with other Nordic countries, is an important and reliable partner of Lithuania. It was the first country to recognize the restoration of Lithuania’s independence 30 years ago. In Lithuania, a popular campaign Takk, Island (Thank you, Iceland) marks the fact every year.
This year also marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Prime Minister of Iceland Jakobsdóttir has invited Prime Minister Šimonytė to become a member of the Council of Women World Leaders, which she chairs. The Prime Minister of Iceland has extended her congratulations to the Prime Minister of Lithuania on women forming half of her Government, and promised to support Lithuania’s current and future initiatives to promote women’s leadership and ensure gender equality.
The central axis of Lithuanian-Icelandic bilateral relations is cooperation in the NB8 format.
During the conversation, the Prime Ministers have also agreed to strengthen economic cooperation, which could be more active. Iceland ranks 57th on the list of Lithuania’s trading partners.
