"It is crucial to prevent (water prices – ELTA) from rising. The new Law on Water and Waste is a substantial instrument. Next, more effective investment of European funds is essential which will amount to LTL 1.4 billion (EUR 405 million) in the next funding period. This is a way which should guarantee that prices will not grow," the president said.
Mazuronis claimed that water suppliers raise prices "not always justifiably", thus, tighter control is needed.
The minister of environment and the president discussed the ministry's priorities for the upcoming years. Grybauskaite obligated the ministry to effectively use the EU support, regulate water price growth, develop waste water management meeting European requirements and ensure that renovation of buildings is implemented.
Grybauskaite relayed through Senior Advisor to the president Nerijus Udrenas that the environment minister raised the bar high for the future successor who is yet to be announced.
