Head of the Lithuanian delegation, Permanent Representative to the United Nations Bureau and other international organisations in Geneva Ambassador Andrius Krivas noted in his address that the core principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent movement is the basis of sustainable humanitarian assistance, and conveyed Lithuania’s respect of and allegiance to the norms of international humanitarian law.
“The Lithuanian Red Cross Society celebrates its 100th anniversary, it is one of the oldest NGOs in Lithuania, and its weighty contribution to humanitarian assistance is very much valued and needed,” A. Krivas said.
The Lithuanian Representative also announced Lithuania’s decision to give EUR 100 thousand for the implementation of the activities of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Ukraine. In May earlier this year Lithuania committed EUR 100 thousand for rendering humanitarian assistance coordinated by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent to the people of Venezuela.
The Ambassador also expressed Lithuania’s support to International Humanitarian Fact-Finding Commission and invited countries to acknowledge its expertise, as well as to make use of its capacity.
The International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent is held every four years in order to address the challenges emerging to the humanitarian law implementation and humanitarian assistance. Resolutions ensuring a more sustainable implementations of the 1949 Geneva Conventions on the protection of war victims and other international humanitarian law and elects the Standing Commission of the Red Cross and Red Crescent. This year Lithuania is represented at the Conference not only by delegates of the Lithuanian Red Cross Society but also of the Ministries of National Defence and Foreign Affairs.
